Orchard District: Top Neighborhood In Bend Featured This Week
Who would have thought that a failed farming experiment blossomed into one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Bend – Orchard District. Read to find out more about this amazing neighborhood!
A Little History About Orchard District And Its Names

The idea for Orchard District came from the historical roots of the area west of Pilot Butte. Back in the 1930s, the area behind what is now Wagner Mall was an apple orchard. The orchard was an agricultural experiment for a climate challenged area such as Central Oregon.
Geographically, the area, being a short distance from the river, experienced banana belt like conditions. A banana belt refers to an area that has significantly warmer conditions than the surrounding territory, thus allowing certain plants to flourish while just miles away they may not. The orchard experiment ultimately failed but left its mark on the history of Bend. Thus, the name Orchard District.
In addition, Orchard District is also called the “Midtown”. It was traditionally called the Orchard District but the name “Midtown” has been catching on lately. It makes sense: find yourself here, and you’ll be smack dab in the middle of Bend. North, South, East, or West: take your pick; you’ll be bound to land somewhere interesting.
Orchard District Association

The Orchard District Neighborhood Association was recognized by the City Council June 5th of 2002, becoming Bend’s third neighborhood association. Orchard District Neighborhood Association (ODNA) encourages residents to come together to invest in the long-term livability of their neighborhood, community, and city.
Here are some of their projects:
Good Samaritan Program

This is a program wherein you adopt a neighbor within your immediate neighborhood and assist them in keeping their driveway and sidewalk free of snow or maybe picking up a couple of needed items from the market if you are headed there anyways. The Good Samaritan Assistance Program has grown immensely, represented by fellow neighborhood associations and volunteers throughout the city.
Let’s Pull Together

This program is a multi-county noxious weed eradication event consisting of collaborative partnerships with city and county government and boards, parks, schools and irrigation districts, neighborhood and homeowners associations, utility companies, private and public entities, businesses and our incredible volunteers all join together for good times and clean country (city) living. Homes in Orchard District: Ideal for Families

Developed in the mid-twentieth century, the residential lots in the neighborhood district are larger than most you’ll find in Bend. Most homes in this neighborhood were built between the 1950s and 1970s. There are a variety of ranch-style, single-level homes with large lots that help this almost-urban area retain its residential appeal.
Families have settled in the Orchard District because of its close access to places like Hollinshead Park and Barn, which boasts a large grass park, off-leash dog area, and the Franklin’s Corner Community Garden.
The Orchard District is ideal for families for its abundance of green space, proximity to downtown Bend, great schools, and quiet streets.
